I keep putting off my design projects to work on illustration projects. I guess that shows where my priorities lie.
I had to choose a musician to draw for a hypothetical illustration for the Rolling Stones magazine, and since one of my classmates accused me of being unable to draw men, I decided to take him up on the challenge.
I chose to draw Farin Urlaub, of die Ärzte fame. I wanted to try another method of CG to see if it works better for me. I'm not too sure if I like it or not, but I think I'll have to try it a bit more to really decide. So here are the steps I took and stuff. Not a tutorial by any means, just showing some progress.

Here's the sketch I started with. I used one reference photo in particular, but changed it a bit here and there. Overall I was happy with my sketch.

I piddled around with the composition a bit, then put a layer on top and set it on multiply. I just shaded it in greyscale, like a value study. I actually didn't really like doing this, as I find that I tend to use a lot more black than I usually would. But I liked the looseness and the quality of his suit, so I wanted to keep that.

Slapped a new layer on top and filled it with my favorite warm yellow colour. I like to use that colour for backgrounds a lot, but I should stop or else all my pics will start looking the same. Then I put a new layer on top, set it on "color" mode, and just put some colour down where I think it should go (approximately).

Put a new layer on top, just in normal mode. Since the colour is already there, I just used the eyedropper, mainly, and started to piddle around with it.

That didn't take long! I think I kind of lost some of the qualities of the suit that I liked, but oh well. Here I adjusted the contrast and colour balance a little bit.

Slapped a texture layer on top and called it a day!
